Description
Businessman and humanitarian Jacob Loose and his philanthropist wife Ella were frequent travelers.  The collection is comprised of images from their early 20th century trips around the world, featuring views of locales as varied as Africa, Ceylon, India, Palestine, and numerous western European countries.

Street scene in Sri Lanka

A street scene in Sri Lanka [then Ceylon] of crowded roads of people walking, some carrying baskets on their heads, some carrying umbrellas, and bullock carts waiting, rickshaws being pulled, and many covered wagons with bowed bonnets parked alongside the road. The market buildings down each side of the street have roofs of curved, clay tiles. Some of the signs hanging on the outside surfaces of a market on the corner on the left side of the photograph read, "Stephens Inks, Blue, Black, Copying Ink" and "Oilmanstore, shoes & slippers."

Sri Lanka man plays a pungi for a cobra snake to move to

Six men stand in the inner Temple of the Tooth

Unidentified group standing in front of inner Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. Six men stand in front of a porch above and behind them that completely surrounds the building. Columns on the porch support a second story. Each column has a fresco at the top. There are 12 square or rectangular works of art imbedded in each wall around the building. A railing supported by spindles surrounds the balcony of the second story which also surrounds the entire building. The eaves of the second story are highly decorated. Thuribles hang from the highly decorated eaves all the way around the first floor. Another building, behind and beside, surrounds this one. A palm tree's leaves can be seen above the outer building on the left side of the photograph. Printed in white ink on the left bottom of the photograph, "Kandy. Inner Temple of the Tooth. No. 512." Exposition to exhibit the Buddha's tooth

Buddhists monks gather around a low, small table with a tablecloth, on which religious objects are displayed for the exposition of the Buddha's tooth in the Temple of the Tooth (Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. Seven monks stand on a porch above and behind the area where the table is, among columns that support a roof. Each column has a fresco at the top. There are 12 square or rectangular works of art imbedded in the wall behind them. A railing supported by spindles with a light atop each spindle surrounds the porch area where the seven monks stand. A thurible hangs from the ceiling above the table with the tooth. Fourteen monks stand in a half-circle around and behind the table with the palms of their hands pressed together. One monk sits to the right of the table in a low chair with his hands together. Five monks squat with the palms of their hands pressed together in front of the table with their backs to the camera. Other Sri Lankans squat behind the monks with their backs to the camera. A boy novice monk (samanera) stands with hands pressed together on either side of the group facing the table. Four men stand and four men squat in light-colored traditional clothing on the right side of the photograph prayerfully honoring the relic.
