Dolores Hobley Collection

Description
The Dolores Hobley Collection was formed by various purchases from her business at Waldo Antiques of Kansas City. The collection consists of photographs that primarily reflect aspects of the African-American cultural experience during the late 19th century and into the 20th century, including in and around Kansas City.

Fire engine of Engine House no. 1

Five African American male fire fighters in their uniforms, pose for a photograph with a fire engine. Two fire fighters sit in the driver's and passenger's seats of the fire engine while two stand along the side and one stands on the back running board just outside the garage door opening to Engine House No. 1. The letters painted on the hood of the fire engine are K.C.F.D. The building behind the fire engine and next door to the fire house has "Wholesale Dickerson Cleaning" painted on the brick wall. An African American man leans on a light post outside the front door of Dickerson Cleaning.

Group standing in a general store

An unidentified group of six African American men and two African American women stand inside a business. In the bottom right corner is a shoe shine chair (shoe shine stand). Behind the shoe shine stand along the wall are three pinball machines which one man with a cigar in his right hand and one woman lean on. Another man stands behind the third pinball machine. In the aisle between the pinball machines and the sales counter, stand two men and one woman. The woman is holding a cigarette in her right hand. Two men lean along the sales counter on the left side of the photograph. At the farthest end of the counter is an open doorway with a sign above that reads, "No admittance. Employees only. Requested by Mgr." Inside the room behind the doorway are soft drink crates stacked in front of a what is possibly a jukebox. Behind the counter are shelves with cubbies for different flat storage items. On the top frame of the shelves is a sign that reads, "Luckies tastes better." On top of the shelves is a uniform hat and other assorted items. In the front right corner is a glass display case with a slanted front glass with what appears to be display boxes of candy inside of the case. A single ceiling lamp hangs in the upper right hand corner.

Diners smile at the photographer

An unidentified group of three African American men and two African American women smile as they share a meal inside an unidentified diner. Two of the men sit on either side of a woman on the left side of the photograph. The woman and the man to her left hold cigarettes in their right hands. At the end of the "U"-shaped counter another woman sits with a man leaning over her left shoulder to smile at the photographer. He wears an envelope-style hat. There are drinking glasses, dishes, and condiment holders on the counter. The photograph is taken through two large elephant ear leaves that match the wall painting behind the patrons of a bird cage in among elephant ear plants and palms.

Darnella, and an African American man [possibly Kansas City jazz pianist Bob Wilson?] are seated at a table with a tablecloth, two beverages for each, and a glass ashtray at an unidentified venue. She wears a hat that looks like a head wrap, a suit jacket, a large lion brooch, earrings and bracelets. He wears a plaid bow tie with his wide-lapel, double-breasted suit jacket, and sunglasses. There are pipe barriers behind them. No one else is sitting at the tables behind the couple.

The man to her right wears a wide tie with a large swirl pattern over a dark shirt, under a vest, under a suit jacket. She wears a dark blouse with a bow at the collar as she smiles at the man to her right. The man to her left wears a light colored suit with a wide printed dark tie. He holds a cigarette in his left hand. He appears to have a scar on his upper lip from his left nostril to his lip. Five unidentified African American men sit at other tables behind the trio.

Two unidentified smiling African American women and other African American men and women on Thanksgiving inside the Jockey Club, 10th and Paseo, Kansas City, Missouri. The woman to the left is holding a cigarette in her left hand as she wears a white tall hat with a large brooch in the center top, a corsage on her left shoulder, a dark, short-sleeved, mid-length dress and dark sleeves that come above her elbows, and open-toed heels with ankle straps. She holds a cigarette in her left hand. The woman to the right, possibly Louise, wears a small disk-shaped hat with two feathers curled to be attached, a three-strand pearl necklace, a large corsage on her left shoulder, a pressed-silk button-down blouse over a matching pressed silk skirt, open-toed heels with ankle straps. Two laughing men holding drinks are behind the ladies' right shoulders. Another man mostly out of the photograph is seated to their left.
