Description

Businessman and humanitarian Jacob Loose and his philanthropist wife Ella were frequent travelers. The collection is comprised of images from their early 20th century trips around the world, featuring views of locales as varied as Africa, Ceylon, India, Palestine, and numerous western European countries.

Tea plantation workers at a tea factory in Sri Lanka

A group of Sinhalese tea plantation workers: men, women, and children; stand in front of and on the stairway up to the second floor of a tea plantation factory in Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. Each worker holds a cylindrical basket that is about three feet tall. A white man wearing a fedora-style hat, stands in front of the group holding an open book and looking at the camera. Beside him is a scale with a basket hanging from it. One man has a hand supporting the top right corner of the scale. A boy with his right side to the camera is looking at the man steadying the scale. A bearded man stands next to the scale. The boys and men workers stand in front of the building. The girls and women workers (except one man) stand on the stairs. There are two doorways at the top of the stairs. A skid stairway descends from the center support between the doorways and down the middle of the stairway. A tall doorway into the first floor of the factory is on the left. The right side of the building is one floor and has glass windows. There are glass windows all around the second floor. A tin roof supported by poles is on the right side of the photograph. To the extreme right side of the photograph, a man holding a basket also holds the hand of a toddler.

Isurumuniya Temple in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

The doorway into the shrine room at Isurumuniya Temple in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon], is a doorway into the side of large boulders. A man stands on either side of the door. The man left of the door holds a fan over his face. In the foreground of the photograph is a rock wall. Above the rock wall are stones step up through three terraces to the door. Stones that are carved with a guard are on either side of the stairs at each terrace landing. A carving to the right of the door is of a man seated by a horse head. Carved on the boulder on the right side of the photograph is the Elephant Pont carving. Carved on every other stone of the wall around the second terrace is a dancing dwarf. To the left of the terraces and porches is a path leading to low clay roof with designs formed by different colors of clay tiles. The roofs hangs over a rock wall. To the right and above the roof is a log ladder leading up between two boulders which leads to another ladder to the top of the highest boulder. Between two boulders on the right side of the page is a rock wall. Printed in black ink on the bottom left quadrant, "Skeen & Co 762." Written on a stone in black ink on the bottom right quadrant, "762."

Queen's Hotel, Kandy, Sri Lanka

Many people stand along the street in front of a wall for the Queen's Hotel in Kandy, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. On the extreme left of the photograph, a man stands in the street, stops and turns to look at the camera. He holds a bundle under one arm. A horse and open carriage sit in front of the entrance to the hotel and under a portico. There are two drivers in front and a couple sits in the back. The steps to the entrance are filled with men and women. The first level of the hotel has arched window and doorway openings. The second floor has an covered porch on the left side of the photograph, arched window openings in the center, and square windows on the right side of the photograph. The center part of the hotel is four stories high. There are three signs that say "Queen's Hotel" hanging along the hotel between the first and second floors. On the right side of the photograph, across the street from the hotel, a group of people sit and stand on a set of stairs with a streetlight at the bottom. Printed in white ink in the bottom right-hand corner, "Kandy. No. 565. C A. Co. Ltd."

Chiefs of Kandy, Sri Lanka, with British Governor of Ceylon, Blake

Kandyan chiefs stand outdoors in two rows in tradition clothing and daggers for chiefs at that time, with the British Governor of Ceylon, Henry Arthur Blake, in the center of the front row in 1905 in Kandy, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. Blake has a sword in his belt and a pocket watch attached to his vest by a chain. There is a chair to the left of Blake. All of the chiefs have some form of facial hair. Printed in white in in the bottom left-hand corner, "Scowen & Co."

Monk inside gateway entrance to Temple of the Tooth

Entrance to the Buddhist temple, Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka [then Ceylon]. A monk stands under the arched gateway into the temple with one hand on the left wall of the gateway. The gateway tower rises possibly three stories high. A stone relief sculpture elephant on the wall on each side of the stairway faces the stairs into the gateway. A tall lamp stands on the wall above each elephant. A parapet stands atop the wall. The edge of each step is carved with a repetitive design.
